After failing to recover from injury as expected, Andy Murray expects to retire after the Australian Open.

At a press conference today, former British and World number 1, Andy Murray broke into tears as he revealed that the Australian Open could be his last tournament. Murray, 31, has been struggling with a hip injury for the past 18 months and after failing to recover as expected, he admitted that his playing days are numbered.

The Scotsman underwent surgery on his hip over a year ago, however he is still unable to play without a constant pain. The former number one has since played 14 matches on his return to Tennis and he still has ambitions to play in the Australian Open. Murray has also stated that he plans to call time on his career after Wimbledon, however he is unsure if he could play through the pain over the next 6 months.

"I'm not feeling good, I've been struggling for a long time…I've been in a lot of pain for about 20 months now. I've pretty much done everything I could to try and get my hip feeling better and it hasn't helped loads…I'm in a better place than I was six months ago but I'm still in a lot of pain. I can still play to a level, but not a level I have played at."

Murray continued… “I think I can get through this until Wimbledon. That's where I'd like to stop playing, but I'm also not certain I will able to do that”

Andy Murray won the US Open in 2012, Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016 and also won a gold medal in The Olympics in 2012. He was also rewarded with a knighthood in the Queen's New Year Honours list at the end of 2016. The Scotsman has been a cult figure in British tennis and he will arguably be seen as the greatest British tennis player of all time. The way his career is ending is not as he would’ve imagined however he has undoubtfully had an amazing career that has inspired a generation of people.
