Roger Federer and Conor McGregor, two of sports greatest’s, became the latest of high-profile stars to contributed towards the fight against COVID-19.

The disease, known as the Coronavirus, has stormed the world at a rapid rate over the past few months and sports stars have been determined to do all they can to help.

20 Grand Slam champion Federer and his wife, Mirka, have donated 1 million Swiss francs (£857,000) "for the most vulnerable families in Switzerland".

Federer’s home nation, Switzerland, has been a country that has been hugely affected by the coronavirus with a reported 9,765 confirmed cases and a death toll of 103.

Federer revealed the news on Instagram, sharing a post with a message towards his followers.

Federer, 38, wrote: "These are challenging times for everyone, and nobody should be left behind,"

"Our contribution is just a start.”

"We hope that others might join in supporting more families in need. Together we can overcome this crisis! Stay healthy!"

Federer was not the only sports star who reached out to help their country with UFC fighter Conor McGregor also showing the good will of his heart.

The Irishman, known as the ‘Notorious’, revealed on Twitter a picture showing a private message with Irish Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, outlining his plans to purchase €1million worth of protective equipment for hospitals in Ireland.

McGregor’s message read: “Today I am purchasing myself, one million euros worth of personal protective equipment to be deployed to all the fighting hospitals in the region,”

The UFC stars’ contribution came after he urged the Irish government to follow in the UK’s footsteps and order an immediate lockdown of the country as efforts to tackle the spread of the disease are stepped up.

Ireland has become another country hugely affected by the virus with 1,564 cases confirmed, with ten deaths recorded.

McGregor has also urged that construction workers should start working from home to stop the continued spread of the disease.

While the disease is continuing to spread and affect many lives, the contributions by Federer, McGregor and many others cannot go unnoticed. Each contribution made is helping massively and the fight against coronavirus will certainly be made easier as time goes on.

Stay home and stay safe.
