USW Women’s 1sts netball came up just short in a thrilling encounter against Bristol, though they certainly went down fighting.

A spirited final quarter effort by the home side, which saw Megan Jones accumulate seven points, was almost good enough to pinch victory.

It wasn’t to be, but there were obvious positives for USW to take forward.

The match scoring was dominated by USW’s Jones and Hermione Hodgeson of Bristol, who contributed 12 and 15 points respectively to their teams.

The first quarter was deadlocked at 9-9 with Jones and Hodgeson each contributing seven of the goals. Artemis Prevot added the other goals for the visitors while Natasha Cowell scored twice for the hosts.

In the second quarter, Bristol just managed to pull clear of USW by a goal. Hodgeson added another eight to her personal tally while Prevot scored a further two.

Jones did her best to keep USW in the contest by adding another five while her replacement strike partner Abigail Meredith opened her account with four.

After the half-time break, the third quarter continued its pattern of play with both teams looking dangerous.

Bristol continued to extend their lead through substitute Kristen Lou as she scored five, while Hodgeson continued her goal scoring threat from the first half by also putting five past the home side.

USW remained strong however and kept within touching distance of the visitors. Jones, who switched to ‘Goal Attack’ continued to fire home as she scored seven of their sides eight points in the quarter.

The third quarter ended with the scores at 26-30 with Bristol just edging it on the court. With only 15 minutes left, the last quarter was going to be crucial for USW.

Yet despite the closeness of the tussle, USW fell agonisingly short.
