Lionel Messi continues to break records in La Liga as he scores goal number 400 in his career.

A double by Suarez and an historic goal from Messi gave Barcelona a comfortable 3-0 win over Eibar to stay five points ahead of nearest rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Messi scored Barcelona’s second as he registered his 400th league goal on only his 435th league game. The Argentine becomes the first player to reach 400 goals in La Liga with Cristiano Ronaldo the only other player to score more than 300 goals. The 31-year-old is also the second player to score 400 goals across Europe's top five leagues, following Cristiano Ronaldo who has scored 409 league goals in 507 games having played in England, Spain and Italy.

Barcelona were not their best, but they proved to be too strong for their opponents. Luis Suarez opened up the scoring in the 18th minute after piecing together a well worked move. Suarez later then rounded off the victory with a smart finish using the outside of his boot.

La Liga continues to take shape, with Barcelona leading the line closely followed by Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid, who have struggled massively after the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, sit in 5th, 10 points off their fiercest rivals at the top. Rayo Vallecano, Villarreal and SD Huesca sit in 18th, 19th and 20th respectively at the bottom of the table.

What’s next?

Barcelona host Levante in the second leg of the 5th round of the Copa del Rey as they look to turn around the tie, after losing 2-1 in the first leg. Eibar don’t play until next Monday as they host Espanyol.
