Son Heung-Min scored a goal of the season contender with a wonderful solo run as Tottenham returned to winning ways by smashing Burnley 5-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Son’s solo effort was joined by goals by Lucas Moura and Moussa Sissoko while Harry Kane also scored two rounding off an impressive victory against a Burnley side that offered very little in the game.
Following a defeat to his former side Manchester United in midweek, Jose Mourinho was looking for an immediate response from his Spurs side, and he couldn’t have asked for more when they kicked off against Burnley.
Tottenham opened the scoring after four minutes when Kane smashed home from 20 yards. The England and Spurs captain found space in the centre of midfield and after receiving the ball from Son, he unleashed a spectacular effort towards goal beating Nick Pop in the Burnley net.
Spurs’ bright start was sign of what was to come and they soon found their second thanks to Moura. The man who sent Spurs into the final of the Champions League last season with a hattrick against Ajax, poked the ball home against Burnley from Dele Alli’s header following Pope’s save from Son.
Tottenham looked lethal in every attack they had and could’ve had three or four if it wasn’t for Sissoko hitting the woodwork and indecisiveness by Alli when through on goal with Son in support.
After a soaking up huge pressure by Spurs, Burnley finally settled into the game and began creating chances of their own. The visitors came inches away from scoring when Chris Wood’s headed rebound was blocked by Davinson Sanchez on the line, following Robbie Brady’s header onto the bar.
There was some anxiousness around the ground as Burnley threatened to score but that was soon gone when Son produced a moment of magic. From a Burnley attack, Spurs won back possession on the edge of the area before Son carried the ball 80 yards, skipping past multiple Burnley challenges, in 12 seconds to place the ball past Pope to finish off a stunning individual run.
Huge cheers filled the ground as the ball hit the back of the net with the Spurs fans singing out the name of their South Korean star who was awarded the Asian International Player of the Year for the third year in a row.
In the second half, Tottenham picked up where they left off as Kane scored his second of the game with another fierce strike. The Spurs striker, after receiving the ball, stepped inside of James Tarkowski before smashing the ball home into the roof of the net past a helpless Pope.
Kane was then involved again as Spurs scored their fifth and final goal through Sissoko. The two combined well down the left before the Frenchman darted through the Burnley defence and toe poked the ball home from close range. Having gone over two years without a goal, Sissoko doubled his Spurs tally in 3 games having netted also against Bournemouth.
Tottenham comfortably cruised to victory, securing a rare clean sheet along the way. The win for Spurs lifts them to 5th in the table, back to 6 points behind Chelsea following their defeat to Everton.
After the game, Spurs manager Jose Mourinho was quick to praise Son and his goal: "Even before this goal my son calls him Son-aldo, Son-aldo Nazario - and today he was Son-aldo Nazario.”
"The only thing that came to my mind is the goal where I had the honour to be seated next to Sir Bobby Robson, it was Compostela-Barcelona, 1996, and Ronaldo Nazario got the ball behind the midfield line and scored a very similar goal to Son. Amazing goal."
Burnley boss, Sean Dyche also spoke after the game in disappointment of the result: "Five goals came from five giveaways. Sloppiness. We don't normally turn it over in those key moments that easily. We had two key chances at 1-0 and 2-0 down, which gives you a foothold. But it wasn't to be. They were too good, too strong and super clinical in their finishing. We're depleted at the minute. We're not a million miles away but we need more than that."
What’s next?
Tottenham travel to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, meanwhile Burnley host Newcastle next Saturday in the Premier League.
