This year is going to be a very important year for myself. I personally had a great first year on my university course, but now is the time to step up further and begin to shape who I am as a professional. Due to everything that is going on in the world at this current time, nothing is going to be simple and I know I am going to have to adapt to be successful.
As stated in my manifesto, the future of my life is really important, therefore it is my responsibility to make it right and how I want it to be. Having a professional brand in my field of work is something I really want to achieve during my time in higher education and it is important that I focus on this as it will help me in my future pursuits. One of the ways I am going to develop my professional brand is to really focus on strongest skills. I feel privileged that I am more skilled using different high-end software’s, such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro, compared to my fellow sports journalism students and I need to make sure I can utilise this and develop my brand through here. Personally, I feel having these skills makes me stand out amongst the rest and this could become my unique selling point to future employers. Along with this, one of my goals to become more than just a sports journalist, but also a videographer, a graphic designer, a podcaster and so much more. This is the brand I want to make myself and this is what I want people to know me as.
As well as focusing on my strengths, I will also home in on my weaknesses as I feel this is important for me to do, as this is how I will grow. If you’re creating a professional brand for yourself, you have to show you can conquer anything even your weaknesses. Employers really like to see someone who can overcome anything as it shows them as a strong candidate and individual. By working on my weaknesses, I can create a strong brand for myself as a person who never gives up and someone who can get through anything.
Finally, another way I am going to develop my professional brand is to continue to work hard and put my own spin on things. If you work hard, you will seek the rewards from it, and this is a big motivation of mine. Some of my biggest influences in the industry have proved that hard work does pay off and they have even developed a massive reputation for themselves. An example of this is football commentator, Martin Tyler, who started off in very humble beginnings. Martin Tyler did not grow up in a celebrity household or have any high-end contacts, he just simply worked hard in his craft and this allowed him to become the person he is now. Tyler has developed a brand for himself as ‘the voice of football’ and this is something inspiring and something I want to replicate in my career. Alongside putting in the hard work, I think it is important to put my own spin on things as this will help develop my brand. By doing this I can potentially find something that is successful in the industry and that can become my unique selling point when people look at me.
Overall as mentioned this year is going to be a very important one for me as this is when I grow as a person and develop my professional brand. I had a fantastic first year on the course but now it is time to do better and really focus on the points stated above. I am confident in my ability and I feel I have potential to do well in the industry.
