International Women’s Day is a really important day across the globe as it gives women the recognition they rightly deserve.
The yearly event began in 1911 and it has been going ever since, with its coverage and recognition rising every time.
After reading both Morgan Lake’s and Sarra Elgan’s story, I have learnt a lot more of about the occasion itself and what progress still needs to be done to help fight for women’s equality.
It is important that women are given the stage to reach success in their chosen profession, as role models are needed for the next generation of young girls. Over the last decade, the rise of female role models in all industries, particularly women’s sport and broadcasting, has skyrocketed and it is only going to get better as time goes on. Claire Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott are currently paving the way for women in sports broadcasting industry, and it will be their inspirers that will continue their legacy.
It is also important that women are given the confidence to do what they want in their careers. Too many women in the past have stepped away from a passion of theirs due to them being scared about what people, particularly men, would say. Everyone is equal and women deserve every right to do what they like, with the confidence that they will not be shamed for doing so.
Something that needs to be changed as soon as possible is the abuse women get on social media. The levels of abuse women get on social media is disgusting, and it has certainly haltered the progress of women over the years. Women have wrongly suffered from online comments, but now is time for change and time for more consequences towards the bullies. The more combat that is done towards these horrible people, the better social media as a platform will become and it will finally give women freedom from abuse.
With it now being 2021, every day, not just international women day, should celebrate women and the amazing work they do in every industry. The future is very exciting and the I am sure that the day will come that everyone will be respected equally.
