Jose Mourinho has been appointed as Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager replacing Mauricio Pochettino after the Argentine was sacked on Tuesday Evening.
After five and a half years, former manager Mauricio Pochettino has been relieved of his duties at Tottenham following a poor start to the season and a disappointing 2019.
Tottenham lie 14th in the Premier League with their chances of a top four finish looking unlikely with Liverpool, Leicester City, Chelsea and Manchester City leading the line.
The relegation type form has shocked most fans having witnessed their team reach a Champions League final only six months ago.
Over the past five years, Mauricio Pochettino has taken Tottenham from a Europa League side to one of the best sides in Europe but this season he has found it difficult to get his players onside.
Contract disputes, lack of trophies and lack of funding have all been a factor in the club’s steady decline over the past few months. For all of Pochettino’s quality’s it looked like he had taken his group of players the furthest he could.
Spurs owner, Daniel Levy, who looked to have full trust in Pochettino took the responsibility on Tuesday night to sack the Argentine and his back-room team. In a club statement Levy said: We were extremely reluctant to make this change and it is not a decision the Board has taken lightly, nor in haste.”
“Regrettably domestic results at the end of last season and beginning of this season have been extremely disappointing.”
“It falls to the Board to make the difficult decisions - this one made more so given the many memorable moments we have had with Mauricio and his coaching staff - but we do so in the Club's best interests.”
On Wednesday morning, less than 24 hours after the announcement of Pochettino’s sacking, Spurs revealed on their website that former Chelsea and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would take over as head coach at the club.
Mourinho who had been out of work since being sacked by United in December 2018, had been in negotiations with Spurs over the past few weeks but it was finally revealed on Wednesday morning to the huge shock of the football world.
Speaking on his appointment, Jose said: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”
Joao Sacremento and Nuno Santos have joined Mourinho at Tottenham becoming the club’s new backroom team.
With Mourinho signing a contract until the end of the 2022/23 season, the Portuguese manager will look to achieve success at Tottenham in which his predecessor just missed out on. Tottenham remain without a trophy since 2008 but with Mourinho at the helm, this could change in the next few years. Mourinho has won 25 trophies whilst under the helm of FC Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United and this has led huge recognition of being one of the world’s most accomplished managers.
A new era at Tottenham has begun with Jose Mourinho now in charge. The self-called ‘special one’ will look to build on his new team set by the great foundations laid by Mauricio Pochettino.
What’s next?
Mourinho will take charge of his first game for Tottenham on Saturday when they face rivals West Ham at the London Stadium. Coincidently, Pochettino’s first game for Spurs was against West Ham, in a 0-1 win, and Mourinho will look to achieve a similar result in his aim to change the clubs fortunes this season.
