Spurs’ miserable week continued as they were dumped out of their second knockout competition in four days by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round at Selhurst Park.
After waiting 799 days, Connor Wickham finally scored a goal to give Palace a deserved lead over Tottenham in ninth minute of the first half. After the goal, Palace were a continuous threat for the Spurs back line and the constant pressure eventually lead to an error by youngster Kyle Walker-Peters. The young full back gifted Palace a penalty after an inexcusable handball which allowed Andros Townsend to haunt his former club by doubling his sides lead from the penalty spot.
Spurs never really recovered from the poor start with only half chances being created throughout the first half. Spurs however, were handed a life line when they won a penalty after Patrick van Aanholt was penalised for a foul on Juan Foyth in the area. Only three days on from Eric Dier's miss at Stamford Bridge, the curse of England's penalty takers struck again as Trippier blazed wide from 12 yards.
After the break, Pochettino made changes to his side but they were not enough to get back into tie. Palace held on to their lead and deservedly progressed through into the fifth round of the FA Cup, for the first time since the 2015-16 season, when they went on to reach the final.
Roy Hodgson spoke after the game and started how pleased he was with his side’s performance. "We can leave Selhurst Park with a smile on our faces and see what awaits us in the fifth round."
What’s next?
Both sides have Premier League action during the mid-week with Tottenham hosting Watford at Wembley on Wednesday whilst Palace face a trip at Southampton on the same night.
